Sheila Militar, ADN, CA, has worked with Dr. Martos and Dr. Stuebe at Scripps Mesa Chiropractic Center since 1996 and is excited to embark on a new journey with them at RB Courtyard Chiropractic Center.
During her time with Dr. Martos and Dr. Stuebe, Sheila has received a degree in nursing. Sheilas gift for massage, together with her knowledge of the human body, has kept her passionate about her profession.
Of all forms of remedial therapy, massage is the oldest. Massage was first practiced in China over 5000 years ago, and was also well known to the physicians of ancient Greece when the "father of medicine," Hippocrates (5th century BC), wrote that the way to health is a scented bath and an oiled massage every day.
Massage relaxes tension in muscles and connective tissue, improves circulation, alleviates stress, improves range of motion and lymphatic flow, and relieves tight and sore muscles. In addition, massage provides emotional well being to people of all ages.
Most people are familiar with Swedish massage, as developed by Per Henrik Link, a Swede who visited China during the 19th century. However, there are many types of massage. As an example:
Shiatsu
This is a form of pressure-point massage and has been practiced for
centuries in Japan. It is based on the principles of the Chinese discipline
of acupuncture.
Therapeutic Massage
This form of massage is widely used in both conventional and alternative
medicine for the relief of pain or physical discomfort. Therapeutic
Massage consists mostly of soothing strokes and rubbing.
Reflexology
This is a specialized massage for the hands and feet.
Sports Massage
This form of massage consists of deep tissue massage, for easing stiff
joints, relaxing tense muscles.
Pre and post-natal massage
Helps relieve some of the common discomforts of pregnancy such as back
pain, neck and shoulder stiffness, sore feet, swelling, fatigue and
stress.
